Going on toward the hinterland, we find the “Macchia della Magona”. A beautiful protected wood and biogenetic oasis. Inside the “Macchia della Magona” you can find 16 naturalistic tracks,for excursions on foot, on horse or by mountain bike for more than 40 KMs.
Birthplace of the Olympic cycling-champion Paolo Bettini, Bibbona is becoming one of the most requested destination for cycling-tourism. Given the particularly mild climate and the particular conformation of the territory, that offers an interesting variety of tracks, several teams choose to come to training to this places.
Particular attention deserve also the small villages in the neighbourhood such as Bolgheri and its Cypresses’ Avenue, well known for the poem “In front of San Guido” by Giosuè Carducci, and Castagneto, where it’s possible to visit the house of the famous poet.
Amateurs of archaeology can choose between different places. In the South you can find Populonia with its Archaeological Park of about 80 ha directly in front of the sea within the suggestive Gulf of Baratti, Piombino with the Archaeological Museum ofthe territory of Populonia, Campiglia Marittima, where is possible to visit the Archaeo-mineral Park of San Silvestro, and from its fortress, at the bottom of Monte Calvi is possible to enjoy a lovely scenery.
In the North, in Cecina is possible to visit the Museum and the Archaeological Park. The Museum show the history of the area from the Palaeolithic to the Roman age through the Etruscan culture. We have to mention also Vada with the archaeological area of San Gaetano.
Rosignano Marittimo and its Bombardieri’s Palace, Castiglioncello and the archaeological area with Etruscan and Roman graves. The journey stops in Livorno at the Museum of Natural History of Mediterraneo where is represented the developmentof the human evolution.
